Fishing tools and cooperatives

“Fishing cooperatives are constituted by professionals who intend to fish or breed fish species in a shared, democratic, self-regulated and protected way.”

In the early decades of the twentieth century, several fishing cooperatives arose in Giudecca, Caorle, Chioggia and Burano. In the 1940s, cooperatives of small-scale fishing workers dedicated to valley, lagoon and coastal fishing emerged in S. Pietro in Volta, Cortellazzo, Pellestrina, Goro and Gorino. In 1932, a cooperative was established in Chioggia which remained the only active small-scale fishing cooperative in the area for many years. Today, many cooperatives are active in the Clodiense territory, including lagoon and coastal fishing operators, as well as open sea fishermen who spend days at sea on modern motorboats.

Chioggia fishing licences authorised in the Marineria of Chioggia include both passive and active fishing tools.

Passive tools are positioned in the water to capture fish passively, taking advantage of their movements or attracting them with bait. These are characteristic of lagoon and coastal fishing and include mail tools (plot, barracuda), nasses, parishes and lines.

Active tools are towed by boats and actively capture the target species. They are used in open seas, coastal waters and lagoons, and come in different types and sizes. Examples include various types of trawl net (coccia, rapid and steering wheel), skibic nets, circuit nets, hydraulic dredges and mechanical dredges.
